Forklaring for ikke-astronomer

En "referee'et", eller "peer-review'et", artikel betyder at den er blevet, er i gang med at blive, eller snart bliver, gennemlæst og kritiseret (og muligvis afvist) af en "ligemand/-dame" (eng.: "peer") som er ekspert på det pågældende område, og efterfølgende publiceres i et videnskabeligt tidsskrift såsom Astrophysical Journal (ApJ) or Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A).

Modsat har en "ikke-referee'et" (nederst på denne side) publikation ikke modtaget kritisk gennemgang fra en ekspert; dette kunne f.eks. være korte notifikationer af interessante observationer, reviews af et emne ved en konference, eller offentliggjort data eller software. Populærvidenskabelige artikler listes normalt ikke her.
