Forklaring for ikke-astronomer

En "refereed", eller "peer-reviewed", eller "fagfællebedømt" artikel betyder, at den er blevet gennemlæst og kritiseret (med risiko for at bliver afvist) af en "ligemand/-dame" (eng.: "peer") som er ekspert på det pågældende område, og efterfølgende publiceret i et videnskabeligt tidsskrift såsom Astrophysical Journal (ApJ) or Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A).

Modsat har en "non-refereed" (nederst på denne side) publikation ikke modtaget kritisk gennemgang fra en ekspert; dette kunne f.eks. være korte notifikationer af interessante observationer, reviews af et emne ved en konference, eller offentliggjort data eller software. Populærvidenskabelige artikler listes normalt ikke her.
