What is a quasar?

Quick explanation

A quasar is the extremely bright result of gas swirling into a "supermassive black hole" in the center of a galaxy.

Quasars can outshine the combined light of all the stars in the Milky Way a thousand times, and are therefore seen across most of the observable Universe.
